Garbage can with a trash tagTrash Tags

CHAPTER 140, ARTICLE II OF THE TOMPKINS COUNTY CODE

Trash tags are the way in which you, the waste generator pays for the weight of trash placed out for regular collection. Small tags are placed on trash bags or cans when the waste is picked up regularly. At the time of collection, the solid waste hauler removes the tag.

According to the County Code, all container program solid waste must have a trash tag. As a result, generators are provided with an incentive to reduce the amount of waste they create.

Haulers must make trash tags available to their customers, and must charge a fee for the tags. Contact your hauler for trash tag availaibility.

At the time of collection, haulers remove the trash tags. These tags may not be left on the same container week after week. It is a violation for residents to place trash out for collection if it does not have a trash tag on it. There are no exceptions. It is also against the law for a hauler to remove trash without a tag on it.

Failure to follow these rules will result in the issuance of tickets to the offendor, which may include you, the hauling company and the driver.

Tompkins County is committed to the trash tag system and will firmly enforce this law.
